Alejandro/The Uncle

Alejandro/el tío

Alguna vez lo vi en una esquina
alto y su uniforme
Los ojos azules me llevaron
a estadios brillantes
       Sorbía un vaso de cerveza
me buscaba palabras en el diccionario
o reíamos

Su bondad limpió mi corazón
largas temporadas con nosotros
viejos atardeceres melancólicos
    y compartió mi soledad

Gran belleza y en sus
rudas manos acariciando
   cantaba la chiroca

En la mañana fue adelgazando
sobrio, duro
(Los pasillos de los hospitales son tan fríos)
Se lo llevaron
Aprendí
que los geranios habían sido regados por él.

Alejandro/The Uncle

Once I saw him in a corner
tall and his uniform
His blue eyes swept me off
to shining stadiums
he would sip a glass of beer
find me words in the dictionary
                                                                or we would laugh
His kindness cleansed my heart
extended stays with us
melancholic old sunsets
                                                 and he shared my solitude
Such great beauty and in his
rough caressing hands
                                                the yellow oriole sang
In the morning he was thinning
                                                                Sober, hard
(The hospital halls are so cold)
They took him away
                                      I learned
That the geraniums had been watered by him.
