Allí en la calle empedrada, en la Junín

fui testigo de la tierra del'Élias

seguro mi cuerpo al lado de Angela

¿Quién grita así como la Ronca?

Críspulo, el viejo Alcantarilla

nombres que pronuncio con amor

y nadie sale a responderme, ni el garage

ni los pavos ni los pollos

y ese silencio de la noche me sigue

como si el taller de mecánica fuera de carburo

y no me deja soñar, no me deja caminar

no puedo respirar y tengo náuseas

grito entonces Hey, Ramos ya no pinte al duco

por favor, no ve que me duele el corazón

y rasguño este poema como puedo

y Ud. está morado, está azul, para negro

y se va y no lo veo esta noche ni ninguna

bajo la ventana en que escondo

este sol que me cae implacable y me destroza

Ahora me limpio el sudor y cojo un pedazo

de masa y me lanzo hasta el fondo del horno de Manolo

quisiera mancharme de harina las espaldas

pero debo contentarme con cantar a la puerta del garage

pero no me río y tengo miedo de no reconocer a nadie.

Back there on the cobblestones, in Junín

I witnessed the land of Elias

my body secure beside Angela

Who else could holler like the girl we called Raspy?

Crispulo, Old Man Sewers

names I now pronounce with love

and no one steps out to answer me, not the garage

nor the turkeys nor the chickens

and the silence of nightfall hunts me

as if the repair shop were grinding carbide

and won't let me dream, won't let me roam

I can't breathe, I become queasy

so I yell Hey, Ramos! quit it with the spraypaint

please, don't you see that my heart is hurting

and I claw out this poem as best I can

and you are maroon, blue, almost black

and gone and I won't see you, not this night or any other

under the window where I hide

this implacable sun that beats me down and destroys me

Now I wipe my sweat and seize a piece of

dough and throw myself deep in Manolo's oven

I wanted so much to powder my back with flour

but I need to content myself with singing at the garage door

but I'm not laughing for fear that I'll never see any of them again.
