Alejandro/The Uncle

Alejandro/el tío

Alguna vez lo vi en una esquina
alto y su uniforme
Los ojos azules me llevaron
a estadios brillantes
       Sorbía un vaso de cerveza
me buscaba palabras en el diccionario
o reíamos

Su bondad limpió mi corazón
largas temporadas con nosotros
viejos atardeceres melancólicos
    y compartió mi soledad

Gran belleza y en sus
rudas manos acariciando
   cantaba la chiroca

En la mañana fue adelgazando
sobrio, duro

Alejandro/The Uncle

Once I saw him in a corner
tall and his uniform
His blue eyes swept me off
to shining stadiums
he would sip a glass of beer
find me words in the dictionary
                                                                or we would laugh
His kindness cleansed my heart
extended stays with us
melancholic old sunsets
                                                 and he shared my solitude
Such great beauty and in his
rough caressing hands
                                                the yellow oriole sang
In the morning he was thinning
                                                                Sober, hard
(The hospital halls are so cold)
They took him away
                                      I learned
That the geraniums had been watered by him.

The Barrage

y no me deja soñar, no me deja caminar
no puedo respirar y tengo náuseas

...

The Barrage

Back there on the cobblestones, in Junín
I witnessed the land of Elias
my body secure beside Angela
Who else could holler like the girl we called Raspy?
Crispulo, Old Man Sewers
names I now pronounce with love
and no one steps out to answer me, not the garage
nor the turkeys nor the chickens
and the silence of nightfall hunts me
as if the repair shop were grinding carbide
and won't let me dream, won't let me roam
I can't breathe, I become queasy
so I yell Hey, Ramos! quit it with the spraypaint
please, don't you see that my heart is hurting
and I claw out this poem as best I can
and you are maroon, blue, almost black
and gone and I won't see you, not this night or any other
under the window where I hide
this implacable sun that beats me down and destroys me
Now I wipe my sweat and seize a piece of
dough and throw myself deep in Manolo's oven
I wanted so much to powder my back with flour
but I need to content myself with singing at the garage door
but I'm not laughing for fear that I'll never see any of them again.

"Qué soledad sin soledad siquiera..."
Juan Luís Velásquez

Las persianas

Nuestros padres vinieron desde lejos
atravesaron valles, arenales, sembríos rezumando a caña

Mis hermanos no eran aún adolescentes

...

"What solitude, bereft even of solitude"
-Juan Luis Velásquez

Blinds

Far came our forebears
traversing valleys, dunes, plantations heady with sugarcane
limpid rice fields, steel bridges
settling at last in the vastest desert they had ever met
They had abandoned the metropolis, muteness of the gods
sober and fecund they strode out in quest of country
a swath of land where the rains were good
So they came to know the dog days, the dust of a decade
their nights were the luster of the loveliest dream
high above the dim lamps of an incipient city

My brothers awaited their teens
in this place just a bike jaunt wide
its modest solitary plazas molting tamarinds
venerable carobs that only understood iguanas
neighborhoods flawless and small, families
assembled al fresco by the street door
Oh summer nights like ethereal starlets
clime of savage rains, oh my village
and I remember the folk hunched over the New Bridge
gauging the terror of a potential deluge
the portentous surge of the river raging once each seven years
and the first luminous signs reproducing
their electric splendor on the waves
My own nation, infancy, shiftless stage
parents magnificent as a cozy mantle
that solitude at finishing off the vermouth
or staying apart in the multitude
Oh madness of dashing through my streets, my dear geometry
What could I think? - where to go finding anodyne for my death?
Go where? Papa, Mama, my brothers, where?
